An artist impression of the completed New Academic Block at St Xavier’s School, Godavari. To the right hand side of the building are Blocks 1 & 2 which have been completed and the remaining Blocks 3,4 & 5 are under construction.
Three trustees and a young ambassador of JMB Educational Fund visited St Xavier’s in April 2019 and one of the key highlights was the tour of the New Academic Block.
It has been nearly two years since the construction work began and progress has been impressive. Not only have Blocks 1 & 2 (12 classrooms and 3 staff rooms) been completed and occupied by Years 11 and 12 but also their science laboratories, the construction of Blocks 3 (the connection between Blocks 1/2 and Blocks 4/5) 4 & 5 are progressing rapidly and due for completion in the second half of 2019. The sight of the completed blocks and the tour of the building site brought a deeper appreciation of the scale of the construction work and the amount of funding needed to complete the project. This project will provide the entire school, all grades from 1 to 12 with new school buildings which are not just earthquake proof but will be a legacy for many generations of students. The New Academic Block will consist of 33 new classrooms, 6 staff rooms and 6 toilet blocks.
We observed that many of the old classrooms are currently unoccupied due to earthquake damage and large cracks can been seen in the structures. Many classes are currently occupying temporary prefabricated buildings which were built immediately after the earthquake and are still having to be used four years on. The plan is to move the students from these temporary buildings to the new academic block when completed within the next 12 months.
The School has covered up to 44% of the total cost of the buildings which includes JMB’s contribution to date but there is an urgent need to raise funds to cover the remaining costs. This funding gap is expected to be covered by loans from various sources including the Jesuit Institutions in Nepal and the Jesuit Society but this would put the School into debt.. The School continues to raise funds for the construction work, locally and from abroad. There is also the need to fund the cost of new school equipment (computers, laboratory equipment ,library furniture and books). JMB Educational Fund will continue to support the building project and will assist in raising funds for the number of classrooms targeted.
Below is a message from Father Samuel dated 2 May 2019:
I would like to express my gratitude to all those who have helped us in building the academic block. We know we have lot more to do. After we finish the structure, we need to furnish the class rooms, computer labs, library etc. We look forward to your valuable and continuous support.
Once again, on behalf of SXG I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Fr. Samuel Simick S, Principal SX
